Electronic wallpaper turns homes into giant gadgets
It sounds like a scenario straight out of a science fiction movie: Wallpaper that speaks or lights up on demand. Researchers from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore have developed a new type of printed electronics that can be used to transform walls into digital devices incorporating miniature speakers, microphones, switches and sensors.

3D printed model imitates Rolex watch
A designed has made an oversized model of a Rolex submariner watch. Everything except the Perspex face and the battery-powered clock mechanism were made on a Ultimaker 2 desktop 3D printer. The plans were made available for anyone to download from Thingverse.com.

Case study: Instruments maker in need of labeling solution
As the Swiss company EMS expanded its international distribution network, it became clear that it needed a new labeling solution to stay compliant with all regulatory and market requirements. Label print speed and varying quality were also issues that needed attention. Ultimately, EMS recognized that all of these challenges could result in fines, recalls, issues with customer satisfaction and, ultimately, loss of business.

Staples acquires Makr to allow customers to design printed objects
Makr promises to make printing company-branded bags, T-Shirts or stationary easy and accessible to anyone. Staples has now completed the acquisition of Makr, an iOS app that enables people to design and print one-of-a-kind materials, and its parent company Happy; both based in Brooklyn, New York. Terms and conditions of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Chevrolet puts video in print ads
Advertising is getting truly interactive. The most recent example: Chevrolet’s ads. The company put video ads on the pages of two widely read magazines, Esquire and Popular Mechanics. The ad with the embedded video was sent out in the pages of the men’s magazines to 10,000 subscribers of each publication. Those subscribers were treated to a player created by the tech company Americhip embedded within a two-page spread for Chevy.

New organs – made to order
Bioprinting is making great progress and at the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine, scientists are hard at work to print human cells and tissue. The goal is to develop ways to make organs when needed, which would spare patients the wait for a suitable transplant and the associated risks.
