HP releases new series of large format printers
Speed is key for the new HP models: The PageWide XL 8000, 5000, and 4000 are the fastest large-format production printers available in color and black-and-white, according to HP. The PageWide XL printers can print posters at speeds up to 30 prints per minute.

Autodesk invests 10 million USD in Carbon3D
Last month, Carbon3D made headlines when the company announced its method would speed up 3D printing 25 to 100 times. It also attracted the attention of software maker Autodesk that announced it would invest 10 million USD in Carbon 3D. The investment is part of Autodesk’s Spark Investment Fund, which it launched last October with the aim of investing up to 100 million USD in 3D printing start-ups. Carbon3D is the fund’s first announced investment.

First 3D print fashion show to take place in New York
3D printed fashion is moving to the center stage. Meckler Media will host the first fashion show for creations made with a 3D printer in New York on April 16, showcasing the latest items from the top designers across the world. Prior 3D fashion shows have taken place in Malaysia and Japan but this one is expected to be the largest on an international scale.

New plastic material for highly concentrated alcohol content
Strong disinfectant with 99.5 percent alcohol, alkali and acid fluids had to be packaged in glass bottles until recently because conventional plastic packaging materials were unable to withstand the corrosive power of these substances. Now, Dai Nippon Printing (DNP) Co Ltd has developed a plastic packaging material that can contain liquid with an alcohol content up to 99.5 percent, a dramatic increase from the 70 percent its material could withstand until now.

Antalis is further strengthening its environmental commitment
The paper, communications and packaging solutions provider Antalis will join like-minded organizations committed to the environmental cause in supporting Cap COP 21, a series of events to help protect the environment. The initiative, organized in the run up to the United Nations Framework convention on Climate Change conference (COP 21), includes meetings, informative events and discussion forums.

UK plastics recycling in need of overhaul
The British Plastics Federation (BPF) has called for the packaging recovery note system to be overhauled after a UK plastic bottle recycling plant was almost forced to close after the price of virgin polymer dropped. The recycling group of the BPF is recommending that plastics recycling targets be altered to reflect the difference between products recycled in the UK and EU and those imported from further afield.

New law against illegal printing to come into force
England and Wales are taking a strong stand against the use of specialized printing equipment for illegal purposes. The Specialist Printing Equipment and Materials (Offences) Act, which becomes law in May, will make it an offence to supply specialist printing equipment with the knowledge that it will be used for the illegal production of ID cards, passports, banknotes and tickets among other secured documents.
