Marty Snider, president of MSA Products Inc. in Nyack, used to have his kitchen, bath and closet organizational products designed and turned into prototypes in China, then the samples were mailed back and forth until arriving at a finished product. Thanks to 3D printing, he can eliminate much of the back and forth, which shortens the development process.

Cambrian Genomics raised 10 million USD to print DNA
The biotech company Cambrian Genomics has made headlines recently with its ability to print the DNA sequences of glowing plants. Now, the company wants to print a virus that kills off certain bacteria. The company has worked for Glaxo Smith Kline, according to press reports. It’s also in talks to formalize a similar business relationship with Roche.

Industry prepares for new EU packaging regulations
The new EU regulation No1169/2011 comes into force on December 13 (with a second deadline of December 2016 for changes to nutritional information) and involves new requirements in terms of the amount of information and the minimum type size. John Corrall, managing director at Cambridge-based Industrial Inkjet Systems, has warned that many printers and packers are effectively “in the dark” about the likely impact of the regulations.

Innovative ink changes color when humidity changes
Chinese researchers were inspired by a longhorn beetle species when they developed a photonic crystal ink that can produce unique color changing patterns. The ink can be printed on an inkjet system and may be used to make it harder to counterfeit money. It also shows promise for other applications including displays and wearable sensors.
