Nike gets serious about 3D printing
Nike has announced that it will use 3D printing in the development of future athletic gear. Now the company has made an investment that underscores the seriousness of the claim. Nike plans to construct a 125,000-square-foot innovation hub at its headquarters called the Advanced Product Creation Center, which will house advanced design and manufacturing technologies, such as 3D printing. Now, experts are discussing which 3D printer manufacturers Nike is most likely to partner with: Stratasys, 3D System, Carbon 3D or any other lesser-known company?

German company PolyIC presents conductive film
Using a roll-to-roll process, PolyIC prints electronics with ultra-thin metal coatings. The printing material, or substrate, is a transparent polyester film. The design team at PolyIC had to come up with a flexible and inexpensive alternative to the commonly used Indium tin oxide (ITO) coatings because they are quite brittle and relatively expensive. To create their conductive film PolyTC, designers had to overcome several hurdles, especially in manufacturing and processing technology.

Grant supports artists working with 3D printing
Manufacturing, medicine and the arts – the possibilities for 3D printing seem endless. A new grant program put forth by Think2Thing and Ryerson University aims to support artists working in 3D print. Meant to support great innovators and budding designers in Canada who they see pushing the boundaries in art, medicine, manufacturing, engineering, fashion, and design, the fund will offer 50,000 USD to two recipients within the arts.

3D printer hardware to reach 1.5 billion USD by 2019 in the U.S.
The U.S. market is the largest market for 3D printers, according to a study by technology market researcher IDC. 3D printer hardware revenue is expected to approach 1.5 billion USD by 2019. FDM/FFF (Fused Deposition Modeling) is the largest technology within the 3D printing market, and FDM/FFF 3D printers have seen explosive growth among suppliers.

Cosmetics packaging blushes when touched
One hallmark of successful packaging is the ability to create an emotional bond with the consumer. While this is often attempted with colors and textures, Russian designer Neretin Stas takes a different route. The packaging for the cosmetic and intimate care brand Naked blushes when touched. The effect is achieved by a thermochromic coating that makes it sensitive to heat, therefore reacting to human touch.

Inx Digital opens new ink production facility in Europe
With an eye on the growing European inkjet ink market, INX Digital Czech opened a 43,000 square foot manufacturing facility in Prague. The new facility will serve customers in Europe, the Middle East and Asia (EMEA). The Prague facility manufactures the full range of inkjet inks, including solvent-based, water-based and UV-curable digital inks. It includes two labs for R&D and quality control, as well as production and warehouse areas.

Rondo uses NFC technology in pharmaceutical packaging
The Swiss company Rondo is, according to its own statement, the first folding box manufacturer to present solutions for the use of NFC technology in the pharmaceutical industry. The aim is to create new interactive communication paths between pharmaceutical manufacturers and patients and between the patient, the physician and the pharmacy, through the incorporation of radio chips.
