Postal Service promotes advanced printing technologies for direct mail
The U.S. Postal Service has started a campaign to motivate direct mailers to try out advanced printing technologies to increase customer engagement and response. Among the five promotions the Postal Service submitted is a new stand-alone promotion for Standard Mail. The “Tactile, Sensory, and Interactive Mailpiece” program will encourage mailers to employ advanced print techniques such as rubberized and sandpaper textures or die-cut interactive pieces.

NASA cooperates with Oregon’s Metal Technology
NASA has entered a number of partnerships recently to expand its expertise in 3D printing. After it announced collaborations with Shapeways and Whiteclouds, NASA now said it is working with Metal Technology, an Oregon based custom manufacturing firm, to develop 3D printed rocket engine parts.

HP behind Oreo’s packaging customization campaign
Hewlett-Packard has distinguished itself as a specialist in customization. Best example: The successful Coca-Cola campaign that featured popular first names on its bottles. It’s no surprise that the maker of Oreo cookies, Mondelez, looked to HP for their personalization campaign that we featured in this section a few days ago. Each custom wrapper is then printed on an HP Indigo WS6800 digital press.

Three companies that turn waste into packaging
It is a growing trend and bright minds are working hard on finding ways to turn waste into eco-friendly packaging. Packaging Digest is highlighting the work on three companies in this area, including one company that focuses on converting methane to PHA, which is thermodynamically favorable compared to converting sugar to PHA and can thus compete on price with traditional plastics.

HP has announced the launch of five new DesignJet printers for large-format printing, with new additions to the technical range including the flagship HP DesignJet T830 Multifunction Printer and the HP DesignJet T730 Printer.
