People of print celebrate tactility and craft
A new book, People of Print, features profiles on 45 individuals or groups devoted to „tactility, materiality, and the visible craft of print.“ The printmakers, designers, illustrators and graphic artists were chosen for their unique contribution to the world of print.

Voxel8 co-founder Daniel Oliver on the future of printed electronics
Voxel8 has attracted a lot of media attention recently for its ability to print using thermoplastics and conductive inks within the same object. In an interview with 3D Print, Voxel8 co-founder Daniel Oliver states that it is likely that 3D printing will focus its efforts to create electronics and products we have never seen before.

A typewriter that prints portraits
This is not necessarily a device everybody will have in their living room but a cool invention nonetheless. The artist Dmitry Morozov has created a photo booth that prints portraits of live subjects using a Brother SX-4000 typewriter. The photo-printer combines an Apple iSight camera with a typewriter to create ASCII art.

Biome3D develops potato-based filament
As demand for bioplastics is on the rise to at least partly replace petroleum-based plastics, companies are experimenting with new source materials. The newest addition: plastics based on potato starch by Biome3D. The company has been engaged in creating a series of bioplastic breakthroughs like compostable coffee.

Case study: Printer finds niche in white digital inkjet printing
The ability to print with white ink has been a big success factor for the printer PS Creative based in Brisbane, Australia. The owner installed an Oki C941 last February and became an early adopter of the technology. More at ProPrint
Stora Enso partners with the ILO to combat child labor
In a serious effort to strengthen its corporate governance, Stora Enso is partnering with the International Labour Organisation (ILO). The public-private partnership aims at strengthening the material supplier’s global policy and efforts to promote decent work and progressively eliminate child labor in its value chain in Pakistan.

Recycling programs in the U.S. can do better
A recent article in Packaging Digest lauded the success of the recycling programs in the U.S. in the past 20 years. A closer look at the available data reveals, however, that 36.48 million tons of packaging still end up in U.S. landfills each year.
