Reinterpretation of the Children’s Book “Berggorillas” as PRINT & DIGITAL CONVENTION Highlight Project Features Customizable Title Page and Lay-Flat Binding

Once again, it’s time to introduce you to a new highlight project at PRINT & DIGITAL CONVENTION 2022. Prepare for the best practices and creative applications displayed at the congress trade show and learn more about the reinterpretation of the children’s book “Berggorillas” from Mondberge Verlag.

The PRINT & DIGITAL CONVENTION, held again this year from June 22 to 23, 2022, jointly organized by drupa and the Fachverband Medienproduktion e.V. (f:mp.), will showcase again several interesting highlight projects worth seeing.

Among these projects is the reinterpretation of the children’s book “Berggorillas” (Mountain Gorillas) by Mondberge Verlag. The Mondberge Verlag raises funds for environmental and species protection projects for mountain gorillas in Uganda by selling books, calendars, and their own reports and lectures. The aim is to inform and educate about the problem of the extinction of mountain gorillas in an entertaining and inspiring way. “Berggorillas” is one of the books being sold for a good cause.

Interactive Children’s Book With Special Features

In the interactive book, children can find information about the gorilla species in a funny and interesting way. Many photos and easy-to-understand texts make it very suitable to be read aloud or self-read by beginning readers. Since the book is almost out of print after the first edition, there will now be a new interpretation, which will come with two special features. Thanks to digital printing, the new edition will allow for a personalized title page. On top of that all motifs can be printed over the entire pages, as the lay-flat technique was used to bind the book, which is explained in more detail in the German version of this article in the video by Digibook Technology Sagl. Further project partners are druckpartner Druck- und Medienhaus GmbH and Carl Berberich GmbH

But before we go into more detail about these two special features, we have some background information about the paper used. The book was printed on VIVUS 100 paper, an RC paper in matte bright white that bears the Blue Angel, the EU Ecolabel, and the FSC recycled label because of its CO2 neutrality. It was printed in a digital printing process using the digital inkjet sheetfed printing system KM1 from Konica Minolta.

Personalizable Title Page and Lay-Flat Binding

As already mentioned, the reinterpretated edition of “Berggorillas” includes two inspiring features. Firstly, the cover page can be personalized beforehand, allowing customers to buy and give away very individual and unique copies of the book.

The other new feature is the creation of an absolutely flat opening by using a specific finishing binding technique: lay-flat binding. With lay-flat binding, there is no longer a classic binding in the book’s spine; the opened book lies completely flat. The print can be applied over the binding so that the motifs on the pages are not interrupted.

Highlight Projects of the PRINT & DIGITAL CONVENTION 2022

We are looking forward to the realization of these features and can’t wait to see this project displayed at PRINT & DIGITAL CONVENTION as part of the Highlight-Guide.
